Janet Biggs will premiere Time Slip, a new performance piece produced by Cristin Tierney Gallery on the occasion of Biggs’s exhibition, Path of Totality. Made in collaboration with performers Mary Esther Carter and Vinson Fraley, Time Slip blends striking choreography and a live vocal score within a immersive video installation. An inquiry into what it means to locate oneself, the work weaves together personal and inherited narratives, historical writing, and colonial records against imagery of precarious environments: Antarctic ice fields, Amazonian rainforests, and Costa Rican cloud forests.
Time Slip places two live bodies in relation to one another and to themselves as they perform in and with Biggs’s video installations. Drawing on the concept of time dilation -- divergence of elapsed time due to the effects of the speed of light -- Time Slip imagines delays, velocity, and slippage between individuals, across histories, generations, gravitational states, and definitions of life and death.
Time Slip suggests that the search for orientation is also a search for relation to inherited histories and environments whose increasing instability is shared but unevenly experienced.

Janet Biggs is a research-based, interdisciplinary artist working in video, film and performance. She is recognized for her immersive and multidisciplinary approach, that incorporates sound, moving images, and language to create new perspectives and possibilities. Biggs work focuses on individuals in extreme landscapes or situations, navigating the territory between art, science and emerging technologies. She has worked with institutions from NOAA to NASA and CERN. Biggs has had solo exhibitions, film screenings, and performances at Jeu de Paume; the Spencer Museum of Art; United Nations Headquarters; Neuberger Museum of Art; Blaffer Art Museum; Musée d'art contemporain de Montréal; Hirshhorn Museum and Sculpture Garden, among others. Reviews of her work have appeared in the New York Times, the New Yorker, Artforum, ARTnews, and many others. She is the recipient of numerous grants and awards, including a 2018 John Simon Guggenheim Foundation Fellowship and the 2022 Visionary Woman Award. Biggs is a member of The Explorers Club and is represented by Cristin Tierney Gallery in New York City.
Mary Esther Carter is a mutli-disciplinary artist hailing from St. Louis, Missouri. An electrifying singer-songwriter, dancer, actor and choreographer, she received her dance training from The Ailey School (NYC) on Fellowship, performing works by Judith Jamison and Take Ueyama and also attended Matthew Corozine Studio Theatre for acting in NYC. She has collaborated with numerous artists including Francesca Harper of The Francesca Harper Project, Miho Hatori of famed indie music duo Cibo Matto, conceptual artist Amy Wan Man Cheung, interdisciplinary artist Janet Biggs, and choreographers Willy Laury , Chelsea Bonosky, and Millie Heckler.
Vinson Fraley is a New York City based multimedia artist working across dance, choreography, music, and performance. Born in Statesville, North Carolina and raised in Atlanta, Georgia, he began his formal training in voice and drama at DeKalb School of the Arts. He started dancing at the age of 14 at DanceMakers of Atlanta. Fraley received his BFA in dance from NYU Tisch School of the Arts in 2015. During his final year of college he became a member of Kyle Abraham’s A.I.M (Abraham.In.Motion) and later joined the Bill T. Jones/Arnie Zane Company in 2017. His work has been presented in the United States, Germany, and France. His movement direction has been seen in videos by Calvin Klein, Burberry, Serpentwithfeet, Madonna, Vogue, Vanity Fair, Nike, and Pattern Beauty. Fraley contributed an original music composition for the Bill T. Jones/ Arnie Zane Company’s work titled Afterwardsness. He is signed to DNA Models and United Talent Agency.
