Diane Burko and Emrose Projects

Studio Visit, Philadelphia, PA
Emrose Projects is honored to have hosted a recent studio visit by the esteemed Diane Burko, Philadelphia-based artist and former professor working at the intersection of Art + Environment.

Based in intimate place-based research and residencies, Burko’s mixed-media paintings and installations shine a light on the effects of human interference in the global landscape - such as deforestation and megadams - on climate and culture, often incorporating creative interpretations of empirical data in her work.

We had the opportunity to see examples of her work over her impressive decades-long career, and learn first-hand how her practice has evolved through curious experimentation to current techniques that incorporate materials such as charred wood from her Bucks County property, and shattered glass to represent monumental glaciers within her canvases.

Burko continues to extensively travel, create, speak on and exhibit her work, including in the current group show ‘Influencers’ at Cristin Tierney Gallery in NYC, and upcoming talk at Ringling College of Art & Design, Sarasota, FL.
