Joe Fig: New Paintings

March 3 - April 9, 2011

Cristin Tierney is pleased to announce Joe Fig: New Paintings, an exhibition of the artist's latest works. Fig's artistic vision is characterized by a conceptual and aesthetic interest in the day-to-day creative practices of fellow artists. In the past, Fig has demonstrated this interest with his detailed sculptural renderings of famous figures in their studios, uncanny simulacra that physically realize a psychological space. In this new endeavor, Fig's particular interest takes a painterly form. On exhibition will be a group of oil paintings alluding to the art historical moment during which the old guard of painting was overtaken by the pioneers of modernism. The works are rendered in a dynamic style that at once denies and promotes traditional painterly illusionism, thus reflecting the creative visions at stake during this watershed moment.

Joe Fig received both a BFA and an MFA from the School of Visual Arts, New York. A selection of earlier work is currently on view at the Massachusetts College of Art and Design in Boston, and his book Inside the Painter's Studio is now in its fourth printing. Fig's art has been favorably reviewed on numerous occasions and it has been included in many group exhibitions, including Size Does Matter at the FLAG Art Foundation, Narcissus in the Studio at the Pennsylvania Academy, and Picturing the Studio at the School of the Art Institute of Chicago. His work is included in notable public and private collections, including the Parrish Art Museum, the Norton Museum of Art, the Fogg Art Museum and the Hood Museum of Art.

Prior to opening the gallery at 546 West 29th Street, Cristin Tierney worked as an advisor for a number of private collectors and institutions in the United States. While continuing to work with certain long-standing advisory clients, Tierney has opened an exhibition space to promote the work of a select group of contemporary artists. Upcoming exhibitions will include projects by: Melanie Baker, Eve Sussman | Rufus Corporation, and Jorge Tacla, among many others.
