Cristin Tierney Gallery is pleased to present shinnecock bay, an exhibition of two video works by peter campus. shinnecock bay commences with a brunch reception on Friday, March 8th, from 10:00 am to noon, before the Armory Show opens for the day. This is the inaugural exhibition in the gallery's new space at 219 Bowery, Floor 2. It coincides with the simultaneous presentations of campus' work at The Bronx Museum of the Arts, at The Armory Show, and as Times Square Arts' Midnight Moment.

shinnecock bay presents two views of the eponymous body of water on the coast of Long Island. Shot five years apart and on opposite sides of the inlet, the two works-leeward (2013) and locks eddy (2018)-chart the artist's continued engagement with the sea, and the increasingly sophisticated video technologies he uses to capture it. The videographs (the artist's name for this medium) differ in style: leeward is heavily abstracted, while locks eddy has a nearly hyperrealistic degree of definition. In each, campus reveals minute shifts in light and color that would be impossible to register with the naked eye. The result is an exhibition inviting one to meditate on the sublime beauty of the natural landscape, while also noting the gap between what we perceive, what the camera records, and what the artist calls attention to in the video.

campus will have multiple works on view in different locations in New York during the month of March. On March 6th, the traveling survey exhibition video ergo sum opens at The Bronx Museum of the Arts. A public reception will be held on Thursday, March 7th, from 6:00 to 8:00 pm. The exhibition explores works from several points in campus' career, including new and recent videographs, and historic videos and installations, many of which have not been seen in the US for several decades. Organized by the Jeu de Paume, Paris, video ergo sum is curated by Anne-Marie Duguet. This is the US premiere of the exhibition. It will travel to North Carolina in the fall, where it will be co-hosted by SECCA, Hanes Art Gallery at Wake Forest University, and the Reynolda House Museum of American Art.

From March 6th through the 10th, select single-channel videos will be presented at The Armory Show on Pier 94. campus will also speak at the fair on Sunday, March 10th at 3:00 pm in conversation with Dr. Tina Rivers Ryan, Assistant Curator at the Albright-Knox Art Gallery. A new exhibitor to the fair, this will be Cristin Tierney Gallery's first time at The Armory Show. We will be located in booth #827 in the Galleries section.

Lastly, campus' 1976-77 video Head of a Sad Young Woman will screen nightly in Times Square as part of Times Square Arts' Midnight Moment program in March. Every evening from 11:57pm to midnight, dozens of screens in Times Square will be taken over by campus' tightly cropped video of a woman who is nearly motionless as she stares into the camera for three minutes. Her scale and sober demeanor suggest a quiet power and emotional intensity as she towers over the landmark intersection. This Midnight Moment screening, presented in partnership with The Armory Show and The Bronx Museum, is scheduled from March 1st through the 31st.
