Video Landscapes at Valletta Contemporary

Jozef Cseres, Profil 3, April 1, 2023

Jozef Cseres reviews the collective exhibition "Meta-Landscapes: Representations and Perceptions" (April 28th - June 25th, 2022) curated for the Valletta Contemporary art gallery in Malta by Chris Meigh-Andrews. The show presented thirteen works by twelve prominent video artists including peter campus.

Most of the displayed artists see landscape as a mental projection of physical space-time and place where the apparent macrocosm interacts with invisible microcosm. For some of them it is a resource of aesthetic experiments, while others perceive landscape as a necessary living space that became endangered due to ambitious human activities. Yet others see in a landscape potential for the extension of one's own poetics. These attitudes can of course merge in the works of some artists, however the most of the exhibited works emitted a desire (or even ambition) to redintegrate already lost essential relationship to primal environment, alienated during last centuries by endeavour of humankind.
