
Born in 1955, Melanie Baker earned a BFA from Pratt Institute and a MFA from Stony Brook University. Her charcoal drawings deal with the concepts of power and masculinity in politics and finance. Baker’s work has been exhibited at the Brooklyn Museum (Brooklyn, NY), the Jersey City Museum, Roebling Hall (New York, NY) and White Box (New York, NY). In 2003, the artist received a New York Foundation for the Arts Fellowship as well as awarded the New York Foundation for the Arts Prize. Other grants and fellowships include the Art Omi International Artists’ Colony, the Sacatar Foundation in Bahia Brazil, the Tyrone Guthrie Center at Annaghmakerrig, Ireland, Valparaiso in Mojacar, Spain and the Lower Manhattan Cultural Council’s Workspace program. Baker lives and works in Brooklyn, NY.
