Private Study: Connoisseurship, Collecting Cristin Tierney and her team offer individualized instruction, private seminars and short courses on selected topics in modern and contemporary art. Seminars are complemented by regular visits to museum and gallery exhibitions, and discussions with guest speakers, including curators, critics, dealers, auction experts and other professionals. Since connoisseurship is the collector’s primary means of addressing questions of value in art, much emphasis is placed upon the fundamentals of this methodology: materials, technique, condition, the historic circumstances under which works of art are produced, and the relationship between form and content. Consideration of these criteria is essential for examining art with a discerning eye. After thoroughly exploring connoisseurship as a methodology, clients will begin to develop their own areas of expertise, and thus their own criteria for a lifelong project of applied connoisseurship.
